Rules for Subject Alternative Name (SAN) Entries

When generating your Certificate Signing Request (CSR) you should use your main external fully-qualified-domain-name (FQDN), such as exchange.mydomain.com as the Common Name (CN) field in the CSR. The three additional server names can be a mix of external FQDN names or internal server names.

For external FQDN’s they must share the same base domain (2nd level domain) as your main FQDN. For example, if your main FQDN is exchange.mydomain.com then you can use autodiscover.mydomain.com, smtp.mydomain.com, or any.thing.mydomain.com as one of the additional SAN names but you cannot use something like autodiscover.otherdomain.com because mydomain.com and otherdomain.com do not share the same 2nd level domain.

For internal server names they must be a single string of characters without any periods, like finance or accounting, but not server.local.

The GeoTrust Power Server ID SSL certificate is licensed on a per-physical-server basic and covers up to four server names hosted on one physical machine. Additional server licenses are available during signup.
