Is GeoTrust Safe to Use on My Site?

May 30, 2018 Scott Rogers Browsers

Since Chrome announced in 2017 that is was deprecating trust for Symantec's certificate brands, including GeoTrust, Thawte, and RapidSSL, we have continued to receive inquiries about whether or not GeoTrust is a trusted, credible certificate for use on production websites.

Fortunately, these brands' new parent company, DigiCert, maintains trusted roots in the Chrome and Firefox browsers.  All owners of these certificates can revoke and replace them on the DigiCert root.  The certificates DigiCert issues in their place are safe to use on your site with no worry about receiving a "Not secure" warning.

If the certificate is within the 90-day renewal window, renew early.  The new certificate will be extended by the remaining time on your previous certificate, and you'll still have the safe, trusted DigiCert root on the new certificate.
