Install SSL Certificate: Exchange Server 2007

Follow these instructions to install your SSL server certificate.

  1. Your SSL server certificate will be sent to you by email. The email message includes the server certificate that you purchased in the body of the email message. It will be labled "Server Certificate (public key)". It is also downloadable from your SSL Manager account (recommended). Copy the certificate from the body of the email and paste it into a simple text editor, such as Vi or Notepad (do not use MS Word).

    Copy Certificate to Notepad
  2. Save this as c:\public.cer or other location where you can find it later. The name and location of the file are not important.
  3. Start the Exchange Management Shell. Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, and then click Exchange Management Shell.
  4. Import the SSL certificate using from the previous step using Exchange Management Shell command Import-ExchangeCertificate.

    Import-ExchangeCertificate –path c:\public.cer
  5. Determine the SSL certificate thumbprint using the following command.

    Get-ExchangeCertificate –DomainName "example.mydomain.com"
  6. Copy the thumbprint and then use the following command to assign the SSL certificate to your IIS web server, SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4 servers (you may not be using all of these).

    Enable-ExchangeCertificate –thumbprint <certificate-thumbprint> -services "IIS,SMTP,POP,IMAP"

Troubleshooting/Testing

New To verify if your certificate is installed correctly, use the GeoTrust Certificate Installation Checker.

Test your SSL certificate by using a browser to connect to your server. Use the https protocol directive. For example, if your SSL was issued to secure.mysite.com, enter https://secure.mysite.com into your browser.

Your browser's padlock icon Browser padlock will be displayed in the locked position if your certificate is installed correctly and the server is properly configured for SSL.

For IIS SSL troubleshooting, Microsoft has designed a tool - SSL Diagnostics - to aid in quickly identifying configuration problems in the IIS metabase, certificates, or certificate stores.
